DEHRADUN: A 26-year-old Army officer, Capt Prashant Kumar Chaurasia, drowned in Asan river on the outskirts of Dehradun while crossing it as part of a military exercise, officials said on Monday.According to Army authorities, the incident took place around 12.20pm on Sat. Chaurasia, who was from Varanasi and attached to the Army's Garhwal Rifles regiment, was taking part in the ‘Cambrian patrol exercise' in Asan river near Vikasnagar area of Dehradun."Capt Chaurasia was fished out from the river by Army personnel and rushed to a nearby civil hospital, where he was provided CPR for about 40 minutes, following which, there was a ‘sustained cardiac activity'. He was shifted to Military Hospital (MH) in Dehradun around 5.20pm the same day," said an officer.During the medical tests at the MH, he was found to have suffered "extensive hypoxic encephalopathy (brain injury caused by reduction in blood flow)"."The officer started having seizures at night along with three cardiac arrests during treatment at MH. Around 9.20am on Sun, he suffered a ‘terminal cardiac arrest'. He was again given CPR for about an hour, but couldn't be revived. He was declared dead at 10.30am," said the officer, adding that his mortal remains were sent home for last rites.Army's central command offered condolences to Capt Chaurasia on its official X handle on Monday.
